چکیده
The f i r s t and most in tens ive attempts a t dwarf mis t l e toe control on t h e Plumas National Forest were made i n the Milford Ranger D i s t r i c t on the eas t s ide of the S i e r r a Nevada. These control attempts were possibly the most extensive i n the Forest Service ' s Cal i fornia Region. Survey and control procedures were based on the l imited knowledge of dwarf mis t le toe avai lable a t t he time. Experience and success were achieved l a rge ly by t r i a l and e r ro r a s knowledge i n control of dwarf mis t le toe was gained. Many hundreds and thousands of acres of formerly heavily infected , de ter iora t ing, and dying stands of Je f f r ey pine a r e now producing acceptable increments of growth. More knowledge needs t o be gained i n determining j u s t what degree of dwarf mis t le toe control i s necessary t o produce acceptable growth gains and s t i l l not allow t h i s p l an t pes t t o ser ious ly damage the u l t imate r e generation of the J e f f r e y pine stands.

Dwarf mistletoe-host interactions in mixed-conifer forests in the sierra nevada.
ABSTRACT We determined the spatial pattern of dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium spp.) associated with two different conifer hosts, white fir (Abies concolor) and Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi), in forests around the Lake Tahoe Basin and at the Teakettle Experimental Forest, both located in the Sierra Nevada. We also examined a number of host variables and bark beetle incidence to determine how these...
متن کاملEffects of Dwarf Mistletoe on Stand Structure of Lodgepole Pine Forests 21-28 Years Post-Mountain Pine Beetle Epidemic in Central Oregon
Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests are widely distributed throughout North America and are subject to mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) epidemics, which have caused mortality over millions of hectares of mature trees in recent decades. Mountain pine beetle is known to influence stand structure, and has the ability to impact many forest processes. Dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium ...
متن کاملEcological Bases for Silvicultural Prescriptions
Preparation of s i lvicul tural prescriptions i s a complex process in lodgepole pine ecosystems. Ecological factors and management decisions must be considered. The presence or absence of dwarf mistletoe in a stand i s one ecological factor that must be considered. Control of dwarf mistletoe i s possible through application of sound s i 1 vicul tural principles.
متن کاملResistance of Ponderosa Pine to Western Dwarf Mistletoe in Central Oregon
Ponderosa pines with little or no dwarf mistletoe in infested stands on the Deschutes, Ochoco, and Rogue River National Forests in Oregon were tested for resistance to dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium campylopodum). Small trees produced by grafting scions from the resistant and susceptible candidates onto seedling rootstock were planted in 1967-69 beneath a heavily infested stand of ponderosa pine...
متن کاملContrasting cascades: insectivorous birds increase pine but not parasitic mistletoe growth.
1. Intraguild predation occurs when top predators feed upon both intermediate predators and herbivores. Intraguild predators may thus have little net impact on herbivore abundance. Variation among communities in the strength of trophic cascades (the indirect effects of predators on plants) may be due to differing frequencies of intraguild predation. Less is known about the influence of variatio...
